Het blijft spoken in Pathmos: bewoners keren na overstroming definitief niet terug in oude woning

More than a hundred Enschede residents felt the ground beneath their feet sink last night when they received word from the municipality and housing association De Woonplaats that they would definitely not be allowed to return to their homes. Sewer water entered the homes last July after an unprecedented downpour put all the drainage systems on edge. The houses became moldy and uninhabitable: too unhealthy to live in. An investigation followed, asking: how can a recurrence be prevented? The answer: it's impossible. At least, probably not for the next eight years. Large-scale interventions are needed throughout the city. In other words: returning is unhealthy, and the risk of recurrence is too high. The residents are not allowed back. The day after, that harsh message still resonates strongly.
