An act of solidarity that seems quite unusual, given Poland was never historically a partner for Britain. We will also touch on the literature and culture of 1939 and what the British people’s perceptions of war and its possibility were. Juliette Bretan is a researcher, writer, and broadcaster on East-Central Europe. She has recently finished her PhD on depictions of Poland in English literature at Cambridge. She has written for The Sunday Times, The Independent, The New Statesman, The i Paper, The Telegraph, The Los Angeles Review of Books, Newsweek, Notes from Poland, Euronews and other media, covering the history, politics, and culture of the region.
