As mountain biking has grown, flat pedals have seen a pretty strong resurgence in popularity over clip-in (counterintuitively called clipless) pedals. They’re easier to get used to, they don’t require special footwear (although you definitely benefit from a nice pair of mountain bike shoes), and they are often less expensive than clip-in counterparts. In the past, to get a nice platform with a comfortable concave shape and enough pins to grip well, you had to spend $100+. Today, there are a number of really well designed flat pedals out there that use a nylon composite body to drop the cost to almost half that price.
