Welcome to another walking tour around Fukuoka City. Today's walk begins at Hakata Station, I will then walk along to Hakata's most popular shopping mall, Canal City. From Canal City, we will go to Chikuzen Sumiyoshi Shrine. Hakata Station is lively and always busy as it is the most visited train station in all of Kyushu. Hakata Station is used by over 122,000 passengers daily! The Tokaido, Sanyo, and Kyushu Shinkansen (bullet train) stops here. Hakata station has over 40 restaurants to choose from and many stores including Hankyu Department Store, Amu Plaza mall, and Tokyu Hands department store. Make your way to the top of Hakata Station and you will see wonderful views of Fukuoka City as well! Canal City Hakata (キャナルシティ博多) is a large shopping and entertainment complex in Fukuoka, Japan. Called the "city within the city," it boasts numerous attractions including shops; cafes; restaurants; a theater; a game center; cinemas; two hotels; and a canal, which runs through the complex. Located adjacent to Fukuoka's entertainment district and between the commercial and retail core of the city, Canal City has become a tourist attraction and commercial success for Fukuoka. It is the largest private development in the history of Japan ($1.4 billion for 234,460 m2 (2.5-million sq. ft.)). It is built with a distinctive fanciful style, with many curving sculptures and fountains and the city of Fukuoka hardly visible, to create an atmosphere like an oasis away from the rest of the town. Chikuzen Province Ichinomiya Sumiyoshi-Jinja Shrine was built around 1,800 years ago and was the chief Shinto shrines of Japan's Sumiyoshi-jinja shrines. In old Japanese texts, this shrine is referred to as "Japan's primary Sumiyoshi-miya Shrine" or "Sumiyoshi Main Shrine." It is said to be the first shrine among the 2,129 Sumiyoshi shrines nationwide. The straight roof of the main hall of this shrine is a specific feature of ancient architectural style, in stark contrast to the later Buddhist style. The main hall is also designated as a national treasure and the copper ax and sword of the shrine are designated as important cultural properties of Fukuoka prefecture. The enshrined kami are Sokotsutsunoo no Mikoto (底筒男命), Nakatsutsunoo no Mikoto (中筒男命), and Uhatsutsunoo no Mikoto (表筒男命)). 🎧 This video contains Binaural Audio.
