The mosque has undergone substantial renovation since 2009 under the guidance of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture and the Government of Punjab, with donations from the governments of Germany, Norway, and the United States. The mosque was built during the reign of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in 1634 or 1635 and took about seven years to finish. In the late 1880s, John Lockwood Kipling, Rudyard Kipling's father, wrote on the mosque and its artistic aspects in the erstwhile Journal of Indian Art. The British scholar Fred Henry Andrews noted in 1903 that the mosque had fallen into disrepair.
