How to Trust Your Painting (Even When It Surprises You)

Hey everyone, every single one of us has stood in front of an easel hoping this painting would finally say something true... and then watched that feeling slip away a few layers in. Today I'm talking about why that happens, and what to do about it. This isn't a technique video. You can find technique anywhere. This is about something deeper: learning to listen to your painting instead of forcing it to be what you originally planned. I'll walk you through my thumbnail sketch process, what I call the "messy middle" (or the teenage stage, if you prefer), and I'll show you a real example, a painting that was supposed to be one thing and very clearly, stubbornly, became something else entirely. A dog, if you're curious. If you've ever looked at a painting and thought "I've ruined it," this one's for you.
