L'homme qui a changé notre vision du vivant | Charles Darwin — Documentaire biographique
In this biographical documentary, Lucien Darcourt retraces the extraordinary life of Charles Darwin—the English naturalist and author of one of the most revolutionary theories in the history of science: the evolution of species by natural selection. Born in 1809 in Shrewsbury to a wealthy family, Charles Darwin was initially considered by his father to be a young man with no future. Expelled from medical school and destined for a quiet career as a country clergyman, at the age of twenty-two he embarked on the HMS Beagle for a five-year voyage that would forever change his view of the world—and ours. From the rainforests of Brazil to the arid plains of Patagonia, from the earthquakes of Chile to the Galápagos Islands and their finches with mysteriously different beaks, Darwin accumulated observations that led him to formulate an idea as simple as it was groundbreaking: species are not immutable. They transform, slowly, inexorably, under the influence of natural selection. But Darwin kept this theory secret for twenty years. He feared scandal, the reaction of the Church, and the hurt his conclusions would inflict on Emma, his devoutly Christian wife. This silence—his notebooks locked away, his manuscripts hidden, his grief over the loss of his daughter Annie—lies at the heart of this story. For Darwin was not only a scientist. He was a man torn between the truth he had discovered and the love he wanted to preserve. This documentary also retraces the publication of On the Origin of Species in 1859, the famous Oxford debate between Thomas Huxley and Bishop Wilberforce, the publication of The Descent of Man in 1871, and the immense legacy Darwin left to biology, medicine, and human thought as a whole. A ten-part narrative, structured like a major historical investigation, to understand how an ordinary man—curious, patient, sometimes fearful—changed the way humanity understands itself.
