Pages of Life – The Story of Genia and Nahum Manor

Genia and Nahum Manor were born in Krakow, Poland. Nahum's family immigrated to Eretz Yisrael when he was a year old, however they returned to Krakow five years later. Nahum attended the Hebrew Gymnasium and was a member of the Scouts Youth Movement. Shortly after the invasion of Poland by the Germans in September 1939, he fled eastwards with his father towards the Soviet Union, however they were forced to turn back. Nahum and his family were imprisoned in the Krakow ghetto following its creation in March 1941. His parents and younger sister were deported in the summer of 1942. Nahum, his older sister and younger brother were later transported to the Płaszów concentration camp. In early 1944 he was sent to Oskar Schinler's factory where he met Genia. Genia's parents ran a grocery store. Her older brother Romek played for the "Maccabi Krakow" soccer team. In March 1941 Genia and her parents were sent to the Krakow ghetto. Her older brother, who had escaped to the Soviet interior prior to the German occupation, returned to the city in order to be with his family, and began working in Oskar Schindler's factory. Following the liquidation of the ghetto, Genia and her parents were sent to Płaszów. Thanks to her brother's efforts, Genia and her father were also able to work in the Schindler factory. They were later joined by her mother. In late 1944, with the Red Army approaching, the factory and its workers were transferred to Brünnlitz in the Sudetenland. Following the liberation, Genia returned to Krakow. Nahum joined the Palyam serving as a radio operator on "Ma'apilim" ships and on arms and ammunition supply ships during the Israeli War of Independence. Genia joined Nahum in Israel in January 1950. Following their marriage they resided in Kibbutz Megiddo, where their two children were born. They later moved to Be'er Sheva where they still live today. Nahum was a technical manager at the "Manpeta" cotton factory and won the Kaplan prize for his achievements. He later worked in the Dead Sea Works. Genia is a painter, a member of the Israeli Artist Association. Discover more Holocaust survivor testimonies here http://bit.ly/2BTmEUo
