Assassin's Creed hidden blade: Would it be practical in real-life?

Lots of people have asked me about the hidden blade, so here is my opinion on the hypothetical practical efficiency of such a weapon design. This is of course all just for entertainment, so don't get any ideas to make of these in your garage to play Altair in a crowded city area... That wouldn't make you very popular. From a martial arts perspective it doesn't make a lot of sense to strap a blade to the wrist instead of holding a knife or dagger in the hand. It's not as stable, doesn't allow the user to apply as much pressure, and it's not as safe or reliable.
