Atsunori Ito is an underhand pitcher with a slight sidearm swing. He was a reserve at Chukyo High School but became the ace at Fukui University of Technology. As a third-year student, he contributed to Japan's gold medal win at the Los Angeles Olympics with the baseball team. In the fall of his fourth year, he threw a no-hitter against Kanazawa University of Economics. After graduating, he joined Kumagai Gumi and played in the Intercity Baseball Tournament for two consecutive years. He joined Hankyu as the first draft pick in 1987 (the last first-round draft pick for the Hankyu Braves). With Orix, he was a Seibu killer, winning five of eight games.
