The answer to that dates back almost four hundred years ago with Maryland's original creation as an English colony, how the Potomac River splits into two branches, and the determination that the northern branch was the "true" one. Needless to say it is a fascinating story. These days Garrett County is home to the wild places of Maryland, a treasure trove of natural wonders, including not only the highpoint, but also the state’s highest waterfall, the last remaining old growth forest in the Maryland, and a swamp preserve unlike anything else in the region.
