Starting with the small Dolgorae submarine in the 1980s, we have recently formalized the development of nuclear-powered submarines, growing into a global submarine powerhouse. Reporter Kim So-young reports on the history of South Korea's submarine development. [Report] This is the 3,000-ton Dosan An Chang-ho, the first submarine in South Korean history to cross the Pacific Ocean, a distance of 14,000 kilometers. The starting point was the 200-ton Dolgorae submarine, launched in 1983. It was the first domestic submarine based on German technology. Subsequently, eight more were built domestically, serving as a stepping stone for localization. It was the first in Asia to be equipped with a fuel cell Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system, dramatically enhancing its submerged endurance. The Dosan An Chang-ho, finally designed with independent technology in 2018. As the first diesel submarine to be equipped with operational vertical launch tubes, it has secured the capability for SLBMs (Submarine-Launched Ballistic Missiles). Now, South Korea's submarine fleet is challenging itself with nuclear-powered, unlimited submerged operation.
