Even so, Trump was not removed by the Senate, continued to dominate the American far-right, and returned to the center of power. How is this possible? In this video, Canada Daily explains how impeachment works in the United States, what it really means, what it doesn't mean, and why so many people in Brazil misunderstand this process. Impeachment in the US does not automatically remove a president. First, the House approves formal charges. Then, the Senate conducts the political trial. To remove the president, two-thirds of the senators are needed. In practice, this makes the process almost impossible when the president's party decides to protect him. The history of the United States clearly shows this. Andrew Johnson was impeached and escaped. Bill Clinton was impeached and escaped. Richard Nixon resigned before the process was over. Donald Trump was impeached twice and escaped twice. The result is an explosive question for any democracy: who can restrain a president when his own party prefers to shield power? A system designed to prevent abuses can become a jammed machine when party loyalty speaks louder than the Constitution. In Brazil, this discussion matters a great deal. Bolsonarism looked to Trump as a model, copied methods, imported narratives, and learned to transform punishment into victimhood. Therefore, understanding the American impeachment also helps to understand how the far right tries to survive politically after attacking the rules of the democratic game itself.
