"I lost friends, yes." D-Day hero on the 6th June, 1944, landings
Watch as Royal Marine Commando Clifford Coates (94), remembers the moment he, and thousands of heroes, landed on Sword Beach. “It doesn’t matter who goes down, you’ve got one objective and it’s that slot over there.” “Yes, I lost friends…” In this intimate video, Royal Marine Commando Veteran Clifford Coates relives his experiences of D-Day. “You could see the little explosions at the mouth of the machine gun as it fired, spitting at you. You had to get a grenade into the slot of the machine gun bunker. If you were unable to do it the man behind you had to try, and if he failed the man behind him, and so on.” “Most of us were deaf, we lost all hearing for days from the grenades and explosions we were exposed to on that day.” If you would like to support Clifford and his fellow veterans from all conflicts, you can do so by playing the Veterans' Lottery - it's the lotto dedicated to supporting heroes in need: https://www.veteransfoundation.org.uk...
