Une vie : Jean-Paul Gaultier

He dressed the greatest, yet he never attended fashion school. Brut met Jean-Paul Gaultier, and here's his story. In partnership with the Nuit de la Pop Culture, Thursday, September 19 on France Inter. Born in 1952 in the suburbs of Paris, Jean-Paul Gaultier developed a taste for couture alongside his grandmother, making Nana, his teddy bear, his first model. As a teenager, Jean-Paul Gaultier became passionate about the work of fashion designer Yves Saint-Laurent. Having never attended fashion school, he fulfilled his childhood dream at 18, becoming assistant to designer Pierre Cardin. In 1977, Jean-Paul Gaultier presented the first runway show for his own fashion house, and just six years later, the designer launched his menswear collection. In 1990, while grieving the death of his partner, who had died of AIDS, Jean-Paul Gaultier was approached by Madonna to design the costumes for her tour. Collaborating with director Luc Besson, he created a highly acclaimed dress for actress Marion Cotillard; Jean-Paul Gaultier is so close to cinema that he even became the first fashion designer to join the jury at the Cannes Film Festival in 2012. "With fashion, you can express yourself, you can say what you think, you can express all your opinions." At the age of 66, Jean-Paul Gaultier still has things to say. With his musical revue "Jean-Paul Gaultier Fashion Freak Show" at the Folies Bergère in Paris, the designer tells his story to the public. ————————————— ▶︎ Watch the video on the Brut website https://www.brut.media/fr/entertainme... ▶ 📲 on the Brut app (iOS): https://apple.co/2UY7gNH ▶ To make sure you don't miss any Brut videos, don't hesitate to subscribe ➞    / @brutfr   and activate the bell 🔔
