#Postwar #History Hi! In this episode of the Postwar series, I'll tell you how Cyprus gained independence. The island was, and remains, an extremely important strategic point in the Mediterranean. Therefore, for hundreds of years, numerous countries and the world's greatest powers fought for control of it. Three countries established their strongest influence in the 19th century: Greece, Turkey, and Great Britain. The former was theoretically the natural administrator of these territories due to the dominant Greek presence in Cyprus. They constituted the majority of the island's inhabitants. Turks, on the other hand, constituted the largest minority, hence the Turkish state, protecting its citizens, did not want to relinquish its rights to govern Cyprus. Due to the growth of its colonial power and influence in the Middle East, Great Britain did not want to relinquish control of such an important island. The dispute between the three countries culminated in the second half of the 20th century. I won't reveal too many details, but I will mention that the Cypriots themselves also took up arms.
