Elvis Presley - Something Blue - From First Take to The Master

Under normal circumstances, all we usually hear when listening to a song, is the finished product, and we often have little inclination as to what is involved in the making and recording of a song. Luckily. however, in the case of Elvis, we have a plethora of outtakes and alternate studio tracks to sift through, and it can often give as much pleasure in arriving at the final product with Elvis and the studio band members. In many cases, this process has seen the final product bare almost no resemblance to the first take, in others we may witness Elvis struggle to master a certain part of the song, and almost share his relief when he finally achieves the result that he had sought from the outset. In the case of "Something Blue" however, we witness a fabulous vocal performance, but instead of a lovely listenable ballad it almost became an unmitigated disaster. Someone, for some unfathomable reason, decided that the song should begin with an intro, which consisted of Wagner's Bridal Chorus, and this would unfortunately have had most hitting the mute button (or the sixties equivalent), and Elvis beautiful vocal would in the main have not been heard. Fortunately this was an idea which was abandoned, and the song was given the standard intro that most of us are familiar with today. The song finds Elvis in master storyteller mode, and as usual this brings the best out of him, and he tells the story in such as a way that the listener has empathy with the protagonist, and can feel his heartache. It was recorded by Elvis on 18 March 1961 at RCA's studio B in Nashville, and the seventh and final take was chosen as the master and it would then become the 'B' side to Kiss Me Quick on the former's release as a single. As with all of these videos, to get the most out of the audio, I highly recommend you use ear /headphones and turn the volume up as much as you dare!
