The games were released worldwide simultaneously on November 17, 2017, for the Nintendo 3DS. They were developed by Game Freak, published by The Pokémon Company, and distributed by Nintendo. The games are based on Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon and use both the game world and most of the characters from Sun and Moon. However, the games feature a different storyline, and some Pokémon can be caught that are different from those in the previous games. Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon were primarily developed by younger developers at Game Freak, while most of the more experienced developers were busy working on a Pokémon game for the Nintendo Switch. Nevertheless, some veteran developers, such as Shigeki Morimoto, who had been working on the Pokémon series for Game Freak since Pokémon Red and Blue, were involved in the development of the games. Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon differ from their predecessors, Sun and Moon, in several ways, including a different storyline: While the story initially resembles that of the previous games, the plots diverge significantly after some time has passed. Although the games, like their predecessors, are set in the Alola region, areas not present in Sun and Moon are accessible via the so-called Ultragates. Furthermore, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon introduced new Pokémon and Ultra Beasts. Furthermore, in addition to battling the criminal organization "Team Skull," familiar from Sun and Moon, players must also fight the new criminal organization "Team Rainbow Rocket" and cooperate with the newly introduced Ultra Research Team.
