Welcome to English in a Minute!  This is the bottom and this is the top. But what does it mean to be “over the top”?  A: Dan, one of Caty’s pens is missing!  D: She probably lost it. Besides it’s just a pen.  A: No, no, no. It’s her favorite pen. First, we interview witnesses. And then, we dust for fingerprints!   D: Don’t you think that’s a bit over the top?  A: Dan, this is the case we’ve been waiting for! D: We?  “Over the top” is used to describe something that’s too extreme or requires too much effort for a situation. Some decorations or clothes are over the top.
