Neil Gladd: Sonata I for Solo mandolin (1983)
The Sonata I for Solo Mandolin was composed between 1980 and 1983, and was first performed at A Festival of Mandolins in Providence, RI on July 8, 1983. The Sonata was a deliberate attempt to combine the virtuoso mandolin techniques of the 18th and 19th centuries with the musical language of 20th century, unlike my earlier Partita a Dodici Toni, which drew its inspiration more from the solo violin music of Bach.
