David Stovall, on "Engineered Conflict: Structural Violence & the Future of Black Life in Chicago."

The Black Metropolis Research Consortium hosted a compelling book talk on March 11, 2026 with Dr. David Stovall (University of Illinois Chicago), the author of" Engineered Conflict: Structural Violence and the Future of Black Life in Chicago." The book looks at "how state policy displaces and isolates Black communities" and the "ways Black communities have resisted state violence and the work of local organizations to address marginalization." Dr. Stovall, was a BMRC Summer Research Fellow in 2020 and conducted research for his book project at that time. Dr. Stovall was in conversation with Damon Williams, a movement builder, hip-hop performing artist, and educator from the South Side of Chicago. The talk took place at The Forum Cafe (318 E. 43rd Street) in the Bronzeville neighborhood of Chicago.
