The Barú Peninsula (sometimes called Barú Island or simply Barú) is a coastal area located south of Cartagena, Colombia, a 45-minute boat ride away. It's famous for its white sand beaches and turquoise waters. It's separated from the mainland by the Canal del Dique. Until 2014, the only way to cross it was by raft or similar watercraft. That year, the so-called "Barú Bridge" was inaugurated. Today, it's a booming tourist destination. Most of the beaches are privately owned, belonging to individuals or tourism businesses, except for Playa Blanca, which is the only public beach. The famous Battle of Barú took place in the waters off Barú in 1708, during which the galleon San José sank. In this video, we'll compare the two beaches there, Playa Blanca and Playa Tranquila, and walk along both so you can decide what you're looking for on a beach day.
