The Beatles "Sgt Pepper's / With a Little Help..." Drum Cover - Ringo Starr Drum Set Lesson
This is the title track and its twin from one of the most influential rock music albums of all time. There's some pretty good reading on Wikipedia about why this album is so highly regarded by musicologists and critics. For me it all boils down to this: I just love how this music feels and sounds; I feel emotion when I hear this music that I don't feel from anything else. "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" and "With a Little Help from my Friends" were written by John Lennon & Paul McCartney (mostly Paul for sure on the Sgt. Pepper's, I'm not sure how much influence John had on With a Little Help). According to George Martin, Paul really drove the entire album project and "Paul appreciated John's contribution on Pepper. In terms of quantity, it wasn't great, but in terms of quality, it was enormous." I didn't do a great job of articulating the "straight vs swung" point I was trying to make. On Sgt Pepper's, yes, it's all straight 8ths. But it's the 16ths that Paul plays straight on the bass guitar, meanwhile Ringo plays swinging 16ths in his fills. On With a Little Help the whole band is obviously swinging, and it's the 8th-notes that are being swung.
