Lies Christian parents believe - Marissa Burt

Today I spoke with Marissa Burt, a Christian author who joined me to discuss the issue of corporal punishment among Christians. We touched on many topics, including: • How the Christian parenting empire shaped a generation of evangelical families and how false promises and myths about "good Christian parenting" betrayed them. • The strong connection between blind adherence to religious principles and the neglect of critical self-reflection. • Understanding that how we raise our children can reflect deeper beliefs, often without questioning if those beliefs are truly beneficial. • The need for a more empathetic, psychologically informed approach to child rearing, especially in Christian homes. • Realizing that a lot of what Christians assume is biblical child-rearing is rooted more in culture than in the Bible. • Seeing that the intention behind the child rearing practices doesn't always align with their actual impact on children. • Acknowledging that parents' attempts at control in parenting often stems from fear, not love or guidance. • The importance of empathy being at the core of any teaching or correction. • The fearful reality that while every parenting system has flaws, few are as intricately defended as religious ones. • Observing families who once embraced strict religious parenting now grappling with the consequences in their adult children. • How the act of breaking cycles of harmful beliefs and practices is an act of courage and love. • The need to look at our motivations as parents to reveal biases we've disguised as 'truth.' • Shifting from fear-based discipline to love-based guidance is a journey worth taking. • The need to learn from the voices of those who were hurt by bad parenting ideas, not silence them. • Being willing to give your child the example of owning up to mistakes. • Acknowledging that harm that was done in abusive parenting doesn’t invalidate the good intentions behind it but invites admission of what was done, in order to start the process of forgiveness and healing.
