Hintertuxer Gletscher: Das einzige Ganzjahres-Skigebiet in Österreich

Perfect weather and fresh snow on the first day of skiing of the 2019/2020 season on the Hintertux Glacier in Tyrol, Austria. Finally, skiing again! This video shows the snow conditions in November. Let me know in the comments! :) The anticipation comes along with the journey through the Zillertal. We discover the first snow. It's white in the ski resort of Tux. There's just under 10 centimeters here at an altitude of around 1,400 meters. The temperatures are below freezing even in the valley. This means we have to clear the ice from the frozen car windshield for the first time this season. Then I finally hold the ski pass in my hands and head up the mountain. I look out the window with joy. My skis, on the other hand, look rather sad. The base is obviously longing for a fresh coat of wax, and the edges could also use a fine-tuning. So I do myself and my equipment a favor and head to the ski service first. Almost everything is done automatically here. Polishing, sharpening the edges, and waxing the skis. My ski equipment is ready in 10 minutes. We drive to the highest point, the Frozen Wall. The ski area reaches up to 3,250 meters. But before we hit the first descent, we warm up with some ski gymnastics. Kathi from the Tuxertal Ski School supports us, shows us how to best prepare our upper bodies and legs, and then wishes us lots of fun. Yes! Let's get started! I try my first turns. It's not going quite as well as I'd like. But I have a whole season to practice now. And honestly: It still feels good to be back in the snow and on the slopes! There are even 37 kilometers of slopes open already. That's the most kilometers of slopes open in Austria in November. But of course, you can already strap on your skis in other ski areas. Among others, the Sölden ski area, the Stubai Glacier, the Pitztal Glacier, the Kitzsteinhorn, the Kaunertal Glacier, as well as the snow-sure ski resorts of Zermatt and Saas-Fee in Switzerland are already open. In Italy, skiing is already possible in Sulden and on the Schnalstal Glacier. We interrupt our day of skiing for a short break and explore the world beneath the ski slopes. A path leads through a narrow entrance into the Hintertux Natural Ice Palace. The large ice cave can be explored along a nearly 1 km long path. At one point, we even board a boat and ride through a narrow ice channel on super-cold water. Everything looks really cool in here. It's like being in another world. And yet we're only 25 to 35 meters below the slopes. Back in daylight, we measure the freshly fallen snow. We estimate that around 30 cm of snow has fallen here in the last few days.
