Country Walking: Wansford to Longthorpe, Cambridgeshire (adapted). 21/8/25

This 12 mile walk was adapted from Country Walking's 9 mile version to accommodate use of the Nene Valley Railway's heritage line. It was undertaken on an overcast afternoon, with a few sunny spells, and a cooling north-easterly breeze. Starting out from Woodston Wharf station this walker takes the train to the rail line's terminus at Yarwell, Northamptonshire. The walker soon joins the Nene Way, which is followed until Lynch Bridge, on the rail line near Nene Park. The route goes via Yarwell Mill, Wansford, Sutton, and Wansford station. The rail line is then followed back to the start at Woodston Wharf station. Lunch was taken at a well-positioned picnic area next to both the river Nene and Wansford bridge signal box, around 5 miles into the walk. The cafe at the station opposite is also a possibility. This was a very decent walk, in this format, with good paths today (the cancellation of the A47 dualling works benefits this walk!), albeit a different story in the wetter months! It could be adapted further, if required, to make use of the various stations, making for a shorter walk.
