The Battery Storage Problem Hiding in the Datasheet

Peel away the hype around battery storage systems and, if you know what to look for on a datasheet, you’ll quickly see that not all battery systems are created equal. At Intersolar Europe, we visited the Ampace stand to learn more about its latest battery technology platforms for residential and commercial energy storage. Both are designed to push the operating window of lithium-ion cell technology, particularly when it comes to low-temperature performance. First up is the new PR-S3 Elite, a residential storage platform designed to charge and discharge at temperatures down to -20°C using Ampace’s FrostCore technology. Rather than relying on the wider industry approach of adding electric heating elements to warm the battery pack, FrostCore is designed to improve cold-weather performance at cell and system level. That matters because additional heating requires power, reduces overall system efficiency and adds another component into the reliability chain. The same low-temperature thinking is also being applied to Ampace’s new C&I storage solution, co-branded with industry leader CATL. The UniC AG440 offers operation down to -25°C without auxiliary heating, alongside class-leading energy density for commercial and industrial applications. For installers and specifiers, the key question is not just how low the temperature rating goes. It’s how the battery achieves that performance. Is it clever cell technology, or is there a small electric heater quietly doing the work?
