With the arrival of summer typically around May 5th or 6th, the cold is finally behind us, making it a month of family celebrations. As if knowing this, orchids grow so well that they can tolerate a little neglect. Giving them more time and attention will lead to a happier, more harmonious family. This isn't to say that orchids should be neglected. While they will thrive even if left alone, a little extra care can lead to significantly better growth and results. Watering and Humidity Management for Orchids in January and May May and June are ideal months for maximizing growth. With ample light and moderate temperatures, orchids experience their most active metabolism of the year. This is also the time when they prepare for a period of rapid growth, accounting for nearly half of their annual growth. With ample sunlight and a vibrant metabolism, water requirements naturally increase. However, May is typically dry, even without a spring drought, and fire warnings are often issued, making it a prime time for wildfires. Therefore, even with the natural benefits of light and temperature, replenishing humidity is crucial. During the day, humidity levels can drop below 40% with windows open, which is usually a low level. However, since cymbidium orchids require high humidity, even a slightly excessive amount of watering isn't a bad thing. Even if the watering seems excessive, healthy cymbidium orchids rarely experience root rot. Therefore, watering frequently (usually every 2-3 days) is recommended depending on the environment. A good guideline is to water when the bottom of the orchid pot feels slightly damp when you insert your finger. Of course, even if you can't control humidity during the day, it's a good idea to spray water on the greenhouse floor or surrounding walls at night to increase the humidity. While daytime humidity levels below 40% aren't harmful to cymbidium orchids, increasing the nighttime humidity to over 90% is a very beneficial and effective way to support cymbidium growth. During this period, watering should be changed from mid-morning to afternoon, after sunset. Fertilizer Use for Wind Orchids in February and May For wind orchids that were soaked in a revitalizing agent during spring repotting, unless dehydration has yet to occur, fertilizer is essential to maximize growth, grow healthy and robust wind orchids, and build up growth potential. Older sources believed wind orchids didn't require much fertilizer, so placing a few grains of solid fertilizer around the edge of the pot was sufficient. However, recent research has highlighted the need for fertilizer for multi-cropping. Therefore, in spring, to prioritize growth, it's better to use fertilizers high in nitrogen, a growth factor, rather than phosphorus or potassium. In extreme cases, some people dilute liquid fertilizer to 1/4 to 1/8 the recommended concentration each time they water, demonstrating the growing necessity of fertilizer. Of course, I've seen cases where this method worked without major problems, but most people generally use fertilizer at a concentration of about 1/2000 at weekly intervals during the growing season. And as I always emphasize, if dehydration persists or if your orchid is very weak, using fertilizer can ultimately do more harm than good, so be extremely careful. Temperature Management During Orchid Growing in March and May In May, the minimum outdoor temperature remains around 15°C, so opening windows at night won't cause major problems for your orchid. However, you should always be aware of any temperature drops. This year, my house in Gyeonggi Province experienced full-blown summer weather yesterday, with nighttime temperatures ranging from 15°C to 16°C. However, starting tomorrow (May 6th), the temperature will drop to around 9°C, resulting in unusually low nighttime temperatures for about a week. These unusual temperatures are becoming increasingly frequent, making it feel like they're becoming a regular occurrence. Always keep an eye on the weather forecast and pay close attention to the minimum temperature. Sunlight and Shading in Cultivating Cymbidiums in April and May May is the month with the most sunlight of the year. While it may seem like summer has the most sunlight, May actually offers the most sunlight of the year and offers the most comfortable temperatures, creating optimal conditions for Cymbidium orchids to grow. Even if you've grown Cymbidium orchids without shading until April, you may need to provide afternoon sunlight this month, depending on your environment. Since roots are actively grow...
