The Reformation there led to the emergence of Huguenot Protestants, among whom were prominent nobles. Wanting to prevent the country from splitting, the Queen Mother, Catherine de' Medici, and her son, King Charles IX, decided to purge the Protestant elite in one fell swoop. At the wedding of the Huguenot leader, Henry of Navarre, and Princess Margaret of Valois, a massacre took place, known as the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre. However, this only led to further conflict. All these events are depicted in Alexandre Dumas's novel "Queen Margot." Ironically, Henry of Navarre not only survived, but also outlived both Charles IX and his successor, Henry III. Finding himself the closest contender for the throne, he took it under the name of Henry IV, proclaiming, "Paris is worth a Mass!" Although he converted to Catholicism, he nevertheless issued the Edict of Nantes, which granted equal rights to the Huguenots and Catholics.
