Note: I began working on my string quartet during the first leg of my doctorate in composition at the University of Cincinnati in spring of 2017, while working with composer Ellen Ruth Harrison. Given the weight of history this ensemble holds, I felt I was crossing a point in the development of my voice where I finally had nothing to prove, but simply to just be. I did my best to create a work that contained heart and grit, capturing my love for lyricism, harmony and more thorny techniques. It was mostly finished, but I ended up putting the work away and added/revised a little since that time. I finally brought it to completion in 2024 and happy to see this little "mosaic" of my voice throughout 7 years, come to life! -B.R.N.
