Marie-Antoinette : le procès d’une reine - Femmes coupables (3/8)
A guilty woman is one thing. But a guilty queen? And not just any queen, but the last queen of France? That's quite another. Accused of treason and conspiracy against the state just months after the execution of her husband, the former King Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette was tried by a revolutionary tribunal as biased as it was swift. The fledgling French Republic, not yet celebrating its first anniversary, was already in turmoil. And what better way to justify its failings to the people than with a scapegoat? Through the Austrian woman, as she was called, the former queen, the mother, and then the woman, would be judged. It wasn't Marie Antoinette herself who was condemned, but the symbol: a symbol of the old regime, of course, but also of the moral and sexual decline of women. The former queen was certainly not innocent. But after her husband, another symbol had to be executed. And for that, it was the woman who was beheaded. Our guest in this episode: Emmanuel de Waresquiel, historian and author of, among other works, the book *Judging the Queen*, published by Tallandier in 2016. You heard audio excerpts from the superb docudrama, entitled *Marie Antoinette: They Judged the Queen*, directed by Alain Brunard and produced by Arte. 0:00 Marie Antoinette: The Trial of a Queen - Guilty Women (3/8) ———————————- From Véronique Courjault, accused of infanticide, to Anna Göldi, the last witch, and including the trial of the jihadist Inès Madani, that of Irma Grese, the Nazi torturer, and that of Monique Olivier, Fourniret's ex-wife… Who said that crime was a man's affair?
