The word is derived from the Greek galaxias, literally 'milky', a reference to the Milky Way galaxy that contains the Solar System. The 'ghost galaxy' falls in the category of ultra-diffuse galaxies that are known for their extremely low density. Compared to the Milky Way galaxy — which itself amazed astronomers recently with a broken arm anomaly — the NGC 1052-DF2 galaxy has roughly the same volume, but only has about 0.5 percent star density.
