I’ve known Pedrito since I was 12 years old; he’s always been someone I admire. His unique sense of humor, mind-bending rhythms, and one-of-a-kind style have left a life-lasting impression on me. It would only make sense that he would go on to be one of the most influential Cuban musicians of our generation. I've been playing at Dead Letter No. 9 now for about 6 months. Butt, my second residency show, entitled Rumba del Futuro, was a dream gig, not just because I had Pedrito by my side, but because the entire project represents a reevaluation for me. This project isn’t just about honoring Afro-Cuban music—it’s about expanding it, challenging it, and pushing it into new sonic territory. And to have one of my heroes standing next to me, helping me bring that vision to life, was a bit surreal. Rezo, the final track on my debut album, is a dreamlike soundscape—a spiritual offering dedicated to those who are no longer with us.
