Home to around 100 households and 170 people, this island village is a popular pilgrimage site for Buddhists. Yeonhwasa Temple and Bodeokam Hermitage, small temples facing the sea, are renowned as places of prayer that purify the mind and spirit. The hopes of those seeking to find their true selves center around these Buddhist temples on the island, where spring has arrived early. ■ Yeonhwasa Temple and Bodeokam Hermitage, Places of Long-held Aspirations The first stop for most tourists visiting Yeonhwado is Yeonhwasa Temple. Legend has it that the great Buddhist monk Samyeong practiced asceticism here. Although its history is short, it is one of the sacred Buddhist sites, steeped in a 500-year story. Built with a heart dedicated to the Buddha, it serves as a sanctuary where even non-Buddhists can pray and find solace. Bodeokam, a hermitage attached to Yeonhwasa Temple, is built on a cliff a thousand feet high by the sea. It is renowned as a spiritual place of prayer, where fervent prayer with a heart free from greed promises that nothing is impossible. The ocean and the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva visible beneath the cliffs offer a breathtaking view. ■ Mindfulness Practice Continues Even in Daily Life At 3 a.m., the first sound of the dojo stone resonates across the darkness of Yeonhwasa Island. The island's day begins with the first ritual, awakening all things in heaven and earth and purifying the temple grounds. Yeonhwasa Temple is home to four monks and six practitioners. What brings the Yeonhwasa community together during the day is the work of green tea leaves. The temple grounds are filled with tea leaves and bracken, planted by the monk Gosan, who founded Yeonhwasa Temple. Like a growing tree, green tea, which sharpens our energy and spirit, serves as another form of spiritual practice for practitioners. ■ A Journey to Myself On weekends, the Yeonhwado dock bustles with visitors. Surrounded by rugged cliffs on all sides, the island's breathtaking scenery and undulating bridges have begun to captivate those seeking healing. That's why Yeonhwasa Temple is overflowing with wishes and prayers from people across the country. From family health to passing exams, our spiritual journeys are so diverse. Will they ever come true? At the entrance to Yeonhwado, I met a young man staring intently at a map. Oh Jeong-chan (28), a respectable member of society and in his third year of employment, is a solo traveler who took time off to find himself. What does he hope to gain from this trip?
