Face-changing in Sichuan Opera is one of the special skills of Sichuan Opera performance. It originated in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties and developed in the early 20th century. This technique transforms originally abstract and invisible emotions (such as joy, anger, sorrow, and happiness) into concrete visual images to express the dramatic changes in the inner thoughts and feelings of the characters in the play.
