Long before hair was a matter of fashion, it was a marker of identity in Japan. From the chonmage topknot, a style with a shaved crown, neatly bound hair signaling discipline and status, of the samurai to the Edo-period townspeople who expressed personality through subtle variations of cut and part, hairstyles reflected one’s place in society. With the Meiji Restoration came the introduction of scissors; when samurai cut their topknots, it marked not just a change in style, but a turning point in culture itself. Since then, barbershops have become a staple of Japanese life for both 10 minute cuts and elaborate styles. At Record Ongaku Tokoya Seki (レコード音楽床屋 セキ), a rare “meikyoku rihatsuten” — a barbershop inspired by the tradition of meikyoku kissa, music curation takes center stage. Located in Nishi-Tokyo, the shop has been family-run since 1966, with current owner Shintaro Seki carrying on his father’s legacy alone. The interior remains largely unchanged: retro chairs, a compact space, and over 1,000 vinyl records lining the room — so many that two of the three original barber chairs now serve as record shelves.
