Immediately after birth, the mammary tissue produces a thick, yellowish, bitter-tasting, and highly nutritious secretion that differs in composition and appearance from normal milk. This fluid is called colostrum. Its casein and lactose content is lower than in normal milk. However, it is rich in soluble nitrogenous substances and minerals. Besides its high nutritional value, it plays a role in the transfer of immune substances to the calf. Compared to other milks, colostrum contains more dry matter, fat and non-fat dry matter, protein, and, most importantly, a higher concentration of immunoglobulin (Ig). While the dry matter content of normal cow's milk is around 12%, this figure is around 22-28% in colostrum. Colostrum is also a rich source of vitamins A, D, E, and B12, as well as minerals. Colostrum, which contains energy sources in the form of fat and sugar that help maintain body temperature, also contains protein particles that facilitate IgG absorption. Immunoglobulins are the primary active ingredients in colostrum and are found in all mammals, including humans. Immunoglobulins provide superior protection in both the treatment and prevention of viral and bacterial infections and allergies. Colostrum contains five types of immunoglobulins: IgA, IgD, IgE, IgG, and IgM. Bovine colostrum contains the highest amount of IgG. To maintain a healthy and strong immune system, achieve desired levels of live weight gain, and activate autoimmune systems, every calf should be fed high-quality colostrum for the ideal period.
