Il CORAGGIO di GIOVANNI FALCONE
Giovanni Falcone loved life. Yet he went to his death, knowing what he was facing. He accepted isolation without ever doubting the urgency of his work. One of the things that struck me most about the history of the anti-mafia team, for which Falcone gave his life, is that everyone carries on, knowing they'll pay a very high price, because friends are killed. In the name of that blood, those who live do not stop, no matter what happens. May 23, 2022, will mark thirty years since the Capaci massacre. Thirty years since the Cosa Nostra attack in which Judge Falcone, his wife Francesca Morvillo, and his security detail Vito Schifani, Rocco Dicillo, and Antonio Montinaro were murdered. To commemorate Giovanni Falcone, I wrote a novel: Solo è il coraggio (Only Is Courage) (Bompiani). Only the novel could allow me to free Falcone from the conventional celebration, the rhetoric, and the two-dimensionality of the holy card, and restore his humanity.
