Seventy-five years of history, ten generations behind it, now the eleventh. Although, for the record, it hasn't always been called that (the "E" was given to it in the early 1990s), very few cars can boast the legacy of the Mercedes E-Class, the iconic Mercedes sedan never overshadowed by the flagship S-Class and, indeed, a true cornerstone of Stuttgart's sedans. The new Mercedes E-Class has changed a lot. Starting with a hybrid-only range, whether mild or plug-in. But, at the same time, it remains extremely true to itself and to all those who, for personal or professional use, have chosen it and continue to do so. I tested it on the Austrian roads around Vienna, and, below and in the video, I'll tell you how it has evolved to remain the benchmark in its category. The iconic silhouette remains the same. Everything else, however, hasn't. Actually, if you look closely, even the side of the new Mercedes E-Class appears slightly different. The tail is more receding than before, lending the overall impression of greater dynamism, as does the long hood. As for the engines at launch, starting with the mild-hybrid options, there are the 200 hp 2.0-liter gasoline engine with 204 hp, and the 220 d diesel engine featured in this test, with 197 hp, also available with 4Matic all-wheel drive. The plug-in versions, on the other hand, are the 300 E (with a total output of 230 kW, also with 4Matic) and the 400 E (with 280 kW, only with 4Matic).
