smart concept 2 - Der smart for two Electric Nachfolger: 300 km Reichweite? 10-80 % in 20 Minuten?
With the smart Concept #2, smart is showing for the first time what the future of the legendary smart fortwo could look like. At the Global Brand Event in Beijing, the brand is staging nothing less than a strategic turning point. The lineup is set to expand from three models to five by the end of the year, and at its heart is a vehicle that essentially redefines the DNA of smart. The Concept #2 is far more than just a design study. It's a clear signal that the classic two-seater will not only survive in the electric age, but is set to experience a renaissance. The idea is radically simple and yet surprisingly consistently executed. With a total length of just 2,792 millimeters, the vehicle remains firmly in the ultra-compact segment. At the same time, it relies on proportions that deliberately appear spacious. The classic "wheels-at-the-corners" architecture ensures that the interior is used to its fullest potential, even though the exterior dimensions remain minimal. Beneath the exterior lies the newly developed Electric Compact Architecture, or ECA for short. This platform is specifically designed for compact electric vehicles and forms the basis for the eventual production model. The technical specifications reveal the direction this vehicle is headed. An electric range of up to nearly 300 kilometers clearly positions it for everyday urban use, without limiting it entirely to short trips. At the same time, smart promises DC fast-charging capability, which should bring the battery from 10 to 80 percent in less than 20 minutes. So, recharging for approximately 210 kilometers of range in less than 20 minutes? That's a significant statement for this vehicle class, especially considering that such charging times were previously reserved for larger vehicles. In addition, there's a vehicle-to-load (V2L) function. This turns the vehicle into a mobile energy source and can power external devices. This could be a surprisingly relevant added benefit, especially in urban environments or during leisure activities. A crucial aspect for a vehicle of this size remains its everyday usability. Here, the Concept #2 focuses primarily on agility. With a turning circle of just 6.95 meters, the vehicle operates at a level that is exceptional even for classic microcars, matching the performance of the original smart fortwo. In concrete terms, this means that narrow city centers, parking garages, and winding streets lose their intimidating aspect. This concept truly shines precisely where larger vehicles reach their limits. At the same time, smart is striving to balance minimalism with comfort. Despite its compact dimensions, the interior is designed to feel high-quality and meet modern demands. Details such as leather upholstery and a deliberately crafted design demonstrate that the premium aspirations are not compromised, even in the smallest model. The return of the two-seater is no coincidence. In times of growing cities, rising costs, and increasing traffic congestion, this very vehicle concept is regaining importance. The smart Concept #2 shows that compact mobility doesn't have to mean compromise. With a modern platform, fast charging times, and a clear focus on design and individuality, smart is attempting to redefine the city car. Whether it succeeds will only become clear with the production version. One thing is already clear: the small two-seater is back, and this time it's significantly more ambitious than ever. If the technical specifications and, above all, the price are right, then I see great sales potential.
