From Burnout to Balance: Practicing Medicine in Toronto vs the US with Dr. Michael Antil Part II

What actually changes when a U.S. physician moves to Canada? In Part 2 of this three-part series, host Dr. Rob Beck continues his conversation with Dr. Michael Antil, diving into the real-world differences between practicing medicine in the United States and building a new life in Toronto. Dr. Antil shares how his move dramatically improved his work-life balance and overall well-being. He describes a practice environment with far less administrative burden, moving from a 130-person billing structure in the U.S. to just two staff members in Canada, thanks to a simpler, single-payer system. Overhead is lower, reimbursement is predictable, and the stress that once followed him home is largely gone. They also explore philosophical differences between the two systems: essential care is covered in Canada, while elective or cosmetic services are paid out of pocket, helping maintain sustainability without overwhelming patients financially. Beyond medicine, Dr. Antil talks about life in Toronto, safer streets, greater cultural diversity, vibrant neighborhoods, and the unexpected luxury of time. For the first time in nearly two decades, he’s able to truly disconnect on weekends and enjoy family life. This episode is about trade-offs, and why peace of mind, safety, and balance can outweigh a higher paycheck.
