That last part is important. Your shield can take damage, but your actual health bar cannot. The smaller bar is your health and the top bar is your shield. If your shield takes damage, that's okay. You just can't let your shield bar run out. Take it slow and cautious. It doesn't take much to deplete your shield bar. For me, I did this on the first mission, The Pillar of Autumn. Stick with using the magnum and pick up the overshield charges found in the life boats. Pick one up, equip it and then pick up the other so that you have another one ready to go. When using grenades, make you're throwing them far enough away from you to avoid any splash damage. This will add an extra layer of protection to your shield bar. If you do take damage to your health, you can quickly reload your checkpoint to try again. If you happen to be stuck on this, you can actually use the bandana skull for infinite ammo.
