If we didn't have to breathe, would we all swim faster? #swimmingtechnique #swimfaster #swimtraining The fastest swim (see examples in the video) is the 50-meter sprint without breathing! The observation that the world's best athletes don't breathe during a 50-meter freestyle and butterfly sprint isn't based on the fact that the 21-25 second exertion period doesn't require it. Rather, this ability is explicitly trained! And now the question of "why" arises, along with the search for the obviously speed-enhancing factors. A key reason quickly emerges: the less a body rotates, the more efficient its movement is in terms of optimized resistance. There's no propulsion model in the animal kingdom that involves rotating bodies. The same applies to modern technology. Efficient propulsion occurs when the body remains as still as possible. Any disturbance caused by body position inevitably leads to an increase in various resistances (primarily frontal resistance). We have already been able to impressively test and substantiate this aspect with data in the flume. Additionally, here's a link to the study "Breathe Less - Swim Faster?" This finding leads to several conclusions that can be incorporated into your training: A stable body position in the water creates less resistance. A stable body position leads to a higher body position in the water. Training with a swimmer's snorkel promotes a feel for a stable body position. Flexibility training leads to smoother overall movement. Have fun and good luck incorporating these aspects into your training. A contribution by Holger Lning
