Earth without Humans ------------------------------------ Their is no doubt that humans, as a specie that rules the world, should have guilty conscience. In only few thousand years we covered more than third of earth's territory with cities and farms. Big climate changes have been caused by pollution of air and water and constant destruction of forests and animal species. Humans can not live without earth, but earth and most of it's species could live without us. In fact, they would prefer to. If the humankind suddenly vanishes, our planet would quickly adjust and recover from human activities. But what would exactly happen without us? If a deadly virus caused by genetic engineering that affects only humans wipe out the entire specie, what happens to the world we leave behind? Would it flourish? How long would it take until the last evidence of our existence disappears? Everything shuts down After only a few hours lights all around the world are starting to shut down. Most power plants work on fossil fuel and without people nobody would be there to charge them. Extinction of humans would quickly be visible from space since the planet will be in complete dark. Windmills will work a bit longer until the lubricant runs out, but after a few months without maintenance they will stop as well. Without people around to use the electricity, hundreds of nuclear power plants quickly switch to safety mode to prevent meltdown of the reactors and release of radioactive material. Even if security systems fail on certain power plants, the planet will recover from radioactive contamination quite fast. Exceptions are some hydroelectric powered stations that could work few months or even few years without surveillance, until there is no more water in the reservoirs. Lack of power and electricity stops the factories and water pumps. Underground metro stations and tunnels used for drainage are flooded because the pumps that used to stop the underground water won't work without people.
