Lebhaft Program Notes: Contrabassoon Sonata, DWV 133, Gerhard Deutschmann (b.1933) Gerhard Deutschmann was born on May 4, 1933, in Königsberg. After the Second World War, he studied school music in Munich during the 1950s. Since 1958, the composer has worked in Coburg as a composer, music educator (director of studies), and choir conductor. For fifteen years, he directed the long-established concert choir “Sängerkranz”, conducting numerous oratorio concerts, and for more than 30 years, he has also worked as a music critic. His compositional output currently includes more than 150 works in a wide variety of genres, from folk-song arrangements to symphonies. Numerous works have been written for piano, organ, chamber music ensembles, and orchestra. Deutschmann has also composed choral works of almost every type, ranging from song cycles to large multi-choir works with orchestra. He has been a prize winner five times at the Valentin-Becker Competition for Choral Music in Bad Brückenau, most recently in 1997, where he was awarded first prize.
