Recording: Why Being Outside Changes Everything
Why does stepping outside have such a powerful impact on how we think, feel, and connect? In this dynamic virtual panel, we explored insights from Outward Bound’s latest data, drawn from programs across the country, and uncovered what really happens when students reconnect with the natural world. Building on our campaign, The Reset, a day dedicated to trading screen time for in-person connection, we took a deeper look at why outdoor experiences matter now more than ever. Led by moderator Katie Dalbey, Director of Learning and Evaluation at Outward Bound USA, this conversation brought together experts from across the field to share research, real-world experiences, and student reflections. Together, we dug into emerging insights around confidence, belonging, and well-being, and what the data is telling us about the transformative power of time spent outside. In this panel, we explored: Rooted in Nature: The science and lived experience behind the benefits of being outdoor, from improved mental health to deeper connection and presence. Adventurous Learning: How outdoor education came to life through hands-on, immersive experiences. We discussed how organizations like Outward Bound and NatureBridge blend learning and adventure, and how technology both supported and challenged these approaches. Skills for Thriving: Why these experiences mattered beyond the moment. We connected outdoor learning to everyday life and reflected on The Reset, exploring how stepping away from screens can build lasting habits for resilience, focus, and connection. Meet the Panelists: Katie Dalbey, Director of Learning and Evaluation, Outward Bound USA Dawn McDaniel, PhD, Senior Consultant, Partnerships in Education and Resilience (PEAR) Meg Jakubowski, National Director of Education, NatureBridge Dillon Estrada, Expeditions and Outreach Coordinator, Outward Bound California Jalen Corcione, Program Engagement Manager, Cathleen Stone Island Outward Bound School Whether you're an educator, parent, student, or simply curious about the impact of nature, this conversation offered practical ideas and fresh perspectives on bringing more “reset” moments into your life, classroom, and community.
