WHAT’S THE DEAL ON TYPEWRITER RIBBONS?!? It turns out ribbons aren’t really a problem. The standard or universal (also called a Group 1 or DIN 2103) ribbon is about 1/2 an inch wide and fits almost any machine. But spools? Well, spools aren’t so easy. While many vintage manual typewriters take a Group 1 spool, many others have bespoke or proprietary spools without which your machine won’t function. This video tells you more. It also shows you how to change the ribbon on a typewriter and/or swap ribbons between two different types of spools.
