I started playing tennis 2 years ago and became instantly obsessed. These are highlights of a challenge match from the Dovercourt Ladder, a 49-player amateur tennis league in Toronto. Players sit in a ranked ladder and challenge each other to move up. This was one of those matches. I'm a filmmaker, and I'm documenting a full season in this league while I write a TV show set in a near-future world where work has mostly disappeared and people pour themselves into hobbies to find meaning. The hobbies become tribes, the tribes become hierarchies, and the most coveted thing in the city turns out to be a spot in a recreational tennis league. The writing and the season run in parallel.
