Chi erano i Traci?

The Thracian race is described to us in ambiguous terms by Greek sources: on the one hand, ferocious warriors devoted to war, offspring of the god Ares; on the other, the same people as the ineffable poet Orpheus, their land also the homeland of Dionysus. If, in fact, the Thracians were undeniably barbarians for the Classics, their being tangential to Greece somehow made them less alien than other foreign peoples, such as the Persians or the Celts. On the other hand, the very category of Thracians appears to be an invention of Greek ethnography, and it remains a very difficult task for contemporary historians to define it with clear contours, especially because the evidence relating to the Thracian language, or languages, is extremely scant and difficult to interpret. An indomitable people, who gave birth to the famous rebel gladiator Spartacus, despite their early involvement in the historical events of Greece and later the Hellenistic world, the Thracians retain an incredibly elusive nature, which still fuels debate among linguists and anthropologists today.
