Roman Border Fortress [4K] Ruins of Aquincum on the Danube

A tour of the southern part of the ruins of Aquincum, on the right side of the Danube, in the modern-day Óbuda district of Budapest. Aquincum started out as a small military "castrum" on the Danubian "limes", and grew over time to become a fortress, permanently hosting a legion. The civilian town north of the fortress eventually grew to become the capital of Pannonia Inferior, until it's destruction by the Germans around 350 AD, and then the Huns in 409 AD. This walk focuses on the military ruins, and a later one will take us to see the city itself (now an open-air museum). We visit the military Amphitheatre, used for troop training, and other military purposes, rather than civilian events. Another smaller civilian Amphitheatre lies north of the city. We then visit the Fortress, now mostly covered by a metro station, and modern-day streets and buildings, but we can still find evidence of the south gate, thermae, a centurion's quarters, and an exhibition at the metro station, displaying many artefacts. There was some construction work going on, so the thermae were closed, but I got the overall impression that the whole site is well maintained. I recommend a visit to anyone in Budapest.
